Vasylkiv is a town in Kyiv Oblast, around 35 kilometres south-west of the capital. It is among the oldest towns in Ukraine. According to the chronicles, it was founded in 988 by Prince Volodymyr the Great as a fortress named Vasyliv, after his baptismal name. It stands above the valley of the Stuhna river.
From above, the historic centre sits on higher ground, with the main streets converging around the old core and its churches, including the eighteenth-century St Anthony and Theodosius Cathedral. Newer residential districts spread out along the river and roads. Nearby, the long runway of the military airfield forms a strong straight line on the edge of town.
