Victoria is a town in the Araucanía Region of southern Chile, in Malleco Province. It lies on Ruta 5, the Chilean section of the Pan-American Highway, in a broad central valley between the coastal Nahuelbuta range to the west and the Andes to the east. From above, the town is a compact, regular grid surrounded by open farmland.
Victoria was founded in the 1880s as a military outpost during the Chilean occupation of the Araucanía, a period that still shapes the region's history and its relations with the Mapuche people. The town grew from a planned layout, and its central blocks still follow that straight, orderly pattern around a main plaza.
The highway and the railway run past the town, and roads lead out across fields and forestry land toward nearby communities. A river runs along the edge of the town, adding one curving line to an otherwise straight plan.
