Vilankulo is on the coast of Inhambane Province in southern Mozambique, facing a sheltered stretch of the Indian Ocean. On a map, the town runs along the shore rather than inland. Sandy tracks and a small number of paved roads connect its neighbourhoods, which spread thinly back from the water's edge.
The coastline is the main feature. At low tide, wide tidal flats appear, and offshore lie the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago, for which Vilankulo is the usual point of departure. Traditional dhows sail between the town and the islands, and the long curve of the beach gives the map a strong, simple outline.
