Vilshofen an der Donau stands on the Danube between Deggendorf and Passau, at the point where the smaller Vils flows in. The historic centre occupies a narrow strip of land beside the water, and from above the town is defined by these two rivers: the broad Danube sweeping past, the Vils curving in to meet it, and wooded hills rising just behind.
The old town is built around a long market street, the Stadtplatz, closed at one end by the Stadtturm, a tower gate that has become the town's emblem. On the hill above stands Schweiklberg Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded in the early twentieth century, whose buildings look down over the rooftops and the river.
A Vilshofen map poster shows how closely the town has always been tied to water. The Danube gives the sheet a strong, sweeping line, the Vils adds a softer curve, and the compact old centre sits in the angle between them.
