Vis lies farther out in the Adriatic than any other inhabited island of central Dalmatia. From above it is a compact, rounded island of hills and small plateaus. The coastline is cut by many coves and two large bays that hold its only towns.
Vis town sits at the end of a deep bay on the northeast coast and is the arrival point for ferries from Split. Komiža lies on the opposite western side, below the island's highest hill, around a sheltered harbour with a long fishing tradition. A road crosses the interior between the two, past vineyards and fields.
Vis was the ancient Greek colony of Issa and later a military zone closed to foreign visitors until 1989, which helped preserve its character.
