Visnagar sits in the Mehsana district of northern Gujarat, on the broad, level plain that runs across the north of the state. No river or coastline organises the town from above, so the streets do that work themselves. A dense older core of narrow, irregular lanes is surrounded by later neighbourhoods built along the roads that lead out toward nearby towns and villages.
Across Gujarat the town is known for its metalwork, especially copper and brass vessels made in local workshops, a trade that has long shaped its bazaar streets.
