Waltham Abbey sits in Essex on the eastern side of the Lea Valley, at the point where London's northern fringe gives way to countryside. The old town is small and close-knit, gathered around the abbey church and its market place, while newer housing spreads out to the east and north on higher ground.
The abbey church is traditionally said to be the burial place of King Harold, who died at Hastings in 1066. To the west, the valley floor is a network of river channels, reservoirs and former gunpowder works; to the east lies Epping Forest. The M25 cuts across the southern side of the town.

West of the town, the River Lea splits into several parallel channels and navigations, with reservoirs and wetlands between them. It is the most intricate part of the map.
