Yulin lies in the far north of Shaanxi, where the Loess Plateau meets the sands of the Mu Us Desert. On a map the old walled town stands out as a narrow rectangle aligned north to south, with a main street down its length. Newer districts spread around it in wider, more regular blocks, and a river valley runs along the city's eastern side.
In the Ming dynasty Yulin was an important garrison town on the Great Wall. Just north of the city stands Zhenbeitai, one of the largest watchtowers on the wall. In recent decades the city has grown quickly on the back of coal, oil and gas reserves, and new districts now reach well beyond the old ramparts.
A Yulin map poster shows the layers of the city: the elongated historic core, the broad avenues of the modern expansion and the dry landscape at its edges. The contrast between the careful Ming plan and the sprawling new city makes a composition full of historical depth.
