Egmont Castle park
The castle and its park sit close to the market square. With its water and paths, the park softens the dense streets of the centre and marks the town's link to Count Egmont.

Zottegem Map Poster & Print
Zottegem is in East Flanders, south of Ghent, on the northern edge of the gently hilly area known as the Flemish Ardennes. From above, the town centre is a compact knot of streets around the market square and church, with the railway station close by and residential streets spreading outward. Beyond them the land rises and falls in soft ridges, broken up by small woods and villages.
The town's best-known historical figure is Lamoral, Count of Egmont, the sixteenth-century nobleman whose execution in Brussels helped spark the Dutch Revolt. He is buried in the crypt of the church in Zottegem. His former castle, Egmont Castle, stands in a park near the centre, and on a Zottegem map poster its grounds form a green pocket beside the square.
The surrounding hills are well known to cyclists, whose spring classics such as the Tour of Flanders use cobbled climbs in the area, and the minor roads on the map twist and turn as they cross them. Zottegem is also a rail junction. The lines meeting at the station add straight strokes to an otherwise winding road network.

Rail junction
Several lines meet at the station and spread out from the centre in straight arms. They cut across the curving country roads and give the map a clear structure.
Flemish Ardennes roads
South of town, narrow lanes wind over low hills between fields and farms. Some of them are cobbled climbs known from classic cycling races.
