Zwolle, the capital of Overijssel, has one of the most recognisable city outlines in the Netherlands. Its medieval centre is enclosed by a canal that follows the zigzag line of former bastions, creating a clear star shape on the map. Inside, the streets are compact and irregular, typical of an old Hanseatic trading town.
Landmarks include the Sassenpoort, a fifteenth-century city gate, and the tall church tower known as the Peperbus. Around the moat, parks and green strips follow the old fortifications, and the city has grown outward into later districts, with the IJssel river to the west and the Vecht to the north.
