Arix lies in the Hotan region of southern Xinjiang, in the band of oases that runs along the southern edge of the Taklamakan Desert. To the south rise the Kunlun Mountains, whose snowmelt feeds the rivers that make farming possible, and to the north the sand begins. On a map, the settlement is a patch of order within a much larger emptiness.
Irrigation shapes almost everything. Canals and ditches divide the land into regular fields, and roads, often lined with rows of trees, follow the same straight lines. Homes are spread along these routes rather than gathered tightly. As a result the map shows a lattice of lanes and water channels in which the built area and the farmland are closely interwoven.
