Ashburton sits in the middle of the Canterbury Plains, roughly halfway between Christchurch and Timaru on New Zealand's South Island. The town lies between the Rakaia and the Ashburton rivers, known in Māori as Hakatere, and on a map its tidy grid of streets stands out against the flat, open farmland around it.
The town grew as a service centre for the surrounding farms, and State Highway 1 and the main South Island railway run straight through it. Beyond the town, the plains are divided into large rectangular paddocks, many irrigated, with long shelterbelts of trees marking their edges.
