Bad Schwartau lies directly north of Lübeck in Schleswig-Holstein, close enough that the two street networks almost merge. From above, the town follows the small Schwartau river, with residential streets on gently rising ground, patches of woodland and the main roads leading towards Lübeck and the Baltic coast. The river and the green spaces around it break up the grid.
The town's name comes from the river, and the title Bad reflects its history as a spa using iodine-rich brine. Many people also know the name from the Schwartauer Werke, the jam and confectionery producer founded here in the late nineteenth century, whose products are sold across Germany.
