Bānka lies in the south-east of Bihar, where the flat farmland of the Ganges plain meets the first rises of the Chota Nagpur edge. From above, the town is a cluster of lanes around a market core. Roads leave it toward other district towns, and fields, ponds and scattered hills fill the land around it.
The town is the headquarters of Banka district. The district is widely known for Mandar Hill, a granite hill linked in Hindu tradition to the churning of the ocean. The hill draws pilgrims, especially during the winter fair. Bānka itself is a quieter administrative and market town.
