Barbosa lies in the south of Santander, Colombia, in a mountain valley along the Suárez River. On a map, the town has the typical form of an Andean settlement. There is a regular grid of blocks around a central plaza, fitted onto the flatter ground near the river. Around it, the land climbs steeply, and the roads twist as they head into the hills.
The town is a market and transport hub for the surrounding farming region, which is known for sugar cane, fruit and the guava sweets associated with this part of Santander and neighbouring Boyacá.
