Bende is a town in the north of Abia State in south-eastern Nigeria, and the seat of the local government area that carries its name. The land around it is rolling rather than flat. The town has a long history as a trading place in Igboland. It was a busy market on routes that linked the interior with the coast, and it later served as a colonial administrative centre whose name was given to a wider division.
