Bitam lies in Woleu-Ntem province in the far north of Gabon, only a short distance from the borders with Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. The surrounding country is equatorial forest, and on a map that absence of detail becomes part of the picture: the town appears as a concentrated patch of streets set within a wide, quiet field.
Its layout follows the main road that links the north of the country with the rest of Gabon.
