Breyten is a small town on the Mpumalanga highveld, in the Msukaligwa municipality north of Ermelo. The land around it is high, rolling grassland dotted with wetlands and shallow pans, and the town sits in it as a compact rectangle of streets. A railway line passes through, and the map shows the town's layout organised around it, with a separate township area laid out nearby.
The town developed as a railway and farming centre, and coal mining later became important in the wider district. This part of the highveld is also known for its lakes and pans, and the Chrissiesmeer area nearby draws birdwatchers. On the map, water appears as small irregular shapes scattered across the grassland, a pattern that gives the plain its character.
