Chornomors’k lies on the Black Sea coast about twenty kilometres south of Odesa. From above, it is shaped by water on two sides: the open sea to the east, with cliffs and beaches, and the long Sukhyi Estuary to the north, where one of Ukraine's largest ports stretches along the shore with its quays, cranes and rail lines.
The town was built mainly in the second half of the twentieth century around the port, and it was known as Illichivsk until 2016. Its residential districts form regular blocks of housing with broad avenues leading toward the coast, and parks and green strips follow the edge of the cliffs.
