Eldoret lies on the Uasin Gishu plateau in western Kenya, at an altitude of around 2,100 metres. On a map the town has a clear central grid, with the Sosiani River running through it and neighbourhoods spreading outward over gently rolling land. Beyond the edges of the town, the land opens into wide fields of maize and wheat, crossed by roads leading toward Uganda, Kitale and the Rift Valley.
Eldoret is known around the world as a centre of distance running. Many of Kenya's leading athletes come from the surrounding highlands and train on its roads and tracks, and the high altitude is considered an important factor in their success. The town is also a university and agricultural centre, and its airport handles both passengers and cargo.
