Tarime is the main town of Tarime District in the Mara Region of northern Tanzania, a short distance from the border with Kenya. On a map it appears as a compact centre where the main roads meet, surrounded by a looser web of lanes and tracks that spread into farmland. The hilly ground gives many of these routes a gentle, winding line.
The town serves a wide rural area. Much of the surrounding land is farmed in small plots, which reads on a map as open space broken by footpaths and scattered homesteads. Lake Victoria lies to the west and the Serengeti plains to the south. Gold mining is also an important activity in the district.
