Ena lies in the southeast of Gifu Prefecture, in hilly country cut by the Kiso River and its tributaries. It has no single dense centre. Instead, a series of settlements is strung along valleys and roads. From above, the built-up areas follow the low ground, and forested ridges fill the spaces between them.
Two places give Ena much of its identity. Iwamura, in the south of the city, is an old castle town whose mountain castle ranks among the three great mountain castles of Japan. On the Kiso River, a dam created the Ena Gorge, a reservoir whose rocky, tree-lined walls change colour in autumn.
An Ena map poster traces the river and the older routes that followed it, including the Nakasendo. Ōi, one of that highway's post towns, lies within the city. The layout is irregular and shaped by terrain, not planning, which gives the black-and-white linework a delicate, almost hand-drawn quality.

Iwamura's historic merchant street runs below the castle hill. This narrow, linear settlement appears on the map as a single spine of buildings in its valley.
