Florianópolis, the capital of Santa Catarina, lies mostly on Santa Catarina Island, a long strip of land separated from the Brazilian mainland by a narrow strait. The historic centre faces that strait on the island's western shore, with a waterfront avenue curving along the bay and a small grid of older streets rising behind it toward the hills.
Three bridges cross to the continental side, including the Hercílio Luz Bridge, a steel suspension bridge completed in 1926 that has become the city's emblem. Inland, the island is a mix of hills, dunes and settlements, with the Lagoa da Conceição spreading across its eastern half as a wide, irregular body of water surrounded by winding roads.
The island's coastline is lined with dozens of beaches, from quiet coves to long surf beaches facing the Atlantic.
