Fontem sits in the Lebialem highlands of Cameroon's South-West Region, where the land rises in folds of green ridges and narrow valleys. From above, the settlement doesn't form a grid. It spreads along the lines the hills allow, with roads following contours and small clusters of buildings on the flatter shoulders of the slopes.
The town is widely known for its link with the Focolare Movement, which arrived in the 1960s and helped establish a hospital and schools that still shape local life. On a map that history shows only faintly, as a few larger compounds among the scattered houses. The real structure comes from the terrain: switchbacks, streams and the gaps between hills.
