Fraiburgo lies on the plateau of western Santa Catarina in southern Brazil, at an altitude where winters are cool enough for temperate fruit. The town is modest in size, with a centre of regular blocks that thins out along roads following the rolling terrain. Beyond them lies a landscape of farms and forest remnants.
Fraiburgo is widely known as a pioneer of apple growing in Brazil and calls itself the land of the apple. Commercial orchards were established here from the 1960s with help from European growers.
