Gérakas is a suburb on the eastern side of the Athens basin, part of the municipality of Pallini in East Attica. It lies where the city meets the Mesogeia plain, with the slopes of Mount Hymettus rising to the southwest. From above it is a fairly regular field of rectangular blocks, straighter and more open than the older neighbourhoods closer to central Athens.
The area was largely rural until the late twentieth century, when better roads and rising demand for housing brought rapid growth. The Attiki Odos motorway and the rail and metro links toward the airport now run close by and draw bold lines across the edge of the map. Pockets of undeveloped land still break up the grid.
