Hendrina lies on the Mpumalanga highveld, a high, open grassland plateau in eastern South Africa. On a map, the town is a compact grid of streets, with the township of Kwazamokuhle forming a separate cluster nearby. Around them the landscape is wide and flat, marked by farm roads, fences and small seasonal pans.
The region is one of South Africa's main coal-mining areas, and Hendrina is closely associated with the coal-fired power station of the same name nearby. Mine workings, rail spurs and transmission lines cross the countryside, bringing long straight lines and angular shapes into an otherwise gentle terrain.
