Iga lies in western Mie Prefecture, in the Iga Basin, a wide bowl of land surrounded by low mountains. From above, the basin floor is filled with rice fields, villages and small rivers, while forested hills close in on every side. The main town centre, Ueno, grew around its castle, and its streets still reflect the layout of a traditional castle town.
Iga is known throughout Japan as the home of the Iga ninja, whose traditions are presented at the ninja museum in Ueno Park. The rebuilt Iga Ueno Castle, known for its tall stone walls, stands on a hill above the town. Iga is also the birthplace of the haiku poet Matsuo Bashō, and several sites in the town are dedicated to him.
