Invercargill lies on the Southland Plains near the southern tip of New Zealand's South Island. It is one of the flattest cities in the country, and from above its map shows an unusually wide, regular grid, planned in the 1850s with broad streets and generous blocks, many of them named after rivers in Scotland, such as Tay, Dee, Esk and Tweed.
Queens Park, a large green space with gardens and sports fields, sits just north of the centre, and the New River Estuary curves along the western edge toward the sea. The city is also known as the home of Burt Munro, the motorcycle racer whose story became the film The World's Fastest Indian.
