Järvenpää lies in Uusimaa, north of Helsinki, on the northeastern shore of Lake Tuusula. The lake is long and narrow, and it forms the western edge of the town on a map. The main railway line runs north and south through the middle. The town centre gathers around the station, and residential areas spread outward among patches of forest.
Lake Tuusula's shore is known in Finland for its artists' community of the early twentieth century. Jean Sibelius lived at Ainola, the home he and his wife Aino built near Järvenpää, from 1904 until his death. The house is now a museum, and the lakeside road nearby links several homes of artists and writers from that period.
