Main roads cross the centre and continue out into the countryside, and the built-up area gives way quickly to open farmland. Low hills rise at the edges of the wider area, and the land around the town is divided into large fields.
Jidong is a county in Jixi, in the east of Heilongjiang Province, in China's far northeast. The region has long winters, and agriculture and coal mining have played important roles in the local economy. The county town serves as the administrative and commercial centre for the surrounding villages.
