Kai lies in Yamanashi Prefecture in central Japan, on the western side of the Kofu Basin, beside the prefectural capital Kofu. The city was formed in 2004 by merging several towns, and it took the name of Kai Province, the historical name of the Yamanashi region. It is surrounded by mountains, and the basin itself is known for its fruit-growing.
From above, Kai stretches from the flat floor of the basin up towards the hills in the north. The Kamanashi River runs along the southwestern side, with its wide, braided riverbed forming a clear boundary. Residential areas, roads and railway lines fill the lower ground, while orchards and farmland occupy the spaces between them and extend into the slopes.
A Kai map poster shows that transition from dense suburban streets near Kofu to the looser, more rural pattern towards the mountains. The river's broad channel gives the composition a strong diagonal line, and the fine grid of the basin contrasts with the winding roads that climb into the surrounding hills.
