Kami lies inland in Fukuoka Prefecture, away from the coast and the big urban areas of northern Kyushu. The landscape is hilly and wooded, and the town's streets gather along the valley floors where rivers and roads run side by side. From above the settlement looks like a series of connected clusters, not one continuous city.
This part of the prefecture belongs to the Chikuhō area, long associated with coal mining in Japan's industrial past. Today the view on a map is mostly residential streets, farmland in the lower valleys and forest climbing the slopes, with main roads linking the separate districts.
