Khamis Mushait lies on the high plateau of the Asir region in southwestern Saudi Arabia, at around 2,000 metres above sea level. Its map shows a wide, largely level basin filled with a mix of long, straight boulevards and denser clusters of streets. Around the edge the land becomes more broken, and dry hills and wadis begin to interrupt the street network.
The city lies close to Abha, the regional capital, and the two are linked by major roads that make them function almost as a single urban area. Large planned districts, a military air base and wide highways give much of the map a rational, geometric character, while older quarters near the traditional centre keep a tighter, more irregular grain.
The name recalls a weekly Thursday market, khamis being the Arabic word for Thursday, together with the Mushait family name, and trade in the Asir highlands has long passed through here.
