Kora lies in the Western Province of Rwanda, in the high country between the volcanic north and the shores of Lake Kivu. This is a landscape of steep hills and deep valleys, heavily farmed, with small plots of land stepping down the slopes. Settlements here tend to be spread out rather than compact.
On a map, that shows as a network of roads and paths following ridges and valley floors, with houses scattered along them. There is little that looks like a grid. Instead, lines curve and branch as they adapt to the hills, which is typical of the countryside that gives Rwanda its nickname, the land of a thousand hills.
