Kuopio sits on a peninsula in Lake Kallavesi in eastern Finland, and on a map the water dominates. Inlets, islands and bridges surround the town. The centre is laid out as a regular grid of straight streets and square blocks, a clear piece of planning set against the irregular outline of the lake.
