Linkou is the seat of Linkou County in Heilongjiang, in the Mudanjiang area of China's far northeast. On a map the town appears as a compact grid of streets in a broad valley, with farmland in the lowlands and forested hills rising around it.
A railway passes through the town, and the main roads lead out toward Mudanjiang and other centres in the region. The railway and its yards are among the strongest features of the plan: a long, straight band along which the rectangular street blocks are arranged.
