Lushar is the main town of Huangzhong, a district of Xining in Qinghai, at the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. It lies in a valley surrounded by high hills, and the map shows the built area stretching along the lower ground, with roads following the valley floor and the slopes remaining largely empty.
The town is best known for Kumbum Monastery, also called Ta'er Monastery, one of the most important monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. It was founded at the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, the school's founder, and its halls and courtyards climb the hillside on the edge of town, forming a cluster of their own on the map.
