Madison lies just west of Huntsville in north Alabama. It began as a small railroad town, and its compact historic downtown still sits along the tracks. From above, that original core is a small, tight grid. Around it, decades of fast growth have added subdivision after subdivision, full of curving streets and cul-de-sacs, joined by long, straight arterial roads.
The city's growth is closely tied to Huntsville's aerospace and defence economy, centred on nearby Redstone Arsenal and NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Interstate 565 runs along the southern side of town, and Huntsville International Airport lies to the southwest. The result is a map in which large infrastructure frames a mostly residential landscape.
