Mitake lies in southern Gifu Prefecture, in hilly country east of Nagoya. It developed as Mitake-juku, one of the post towns on the Nakasendō, the historic road that linked Edo and Kyoto through the mountains of central Japan. On the map, the old route can still be traced through the town, running along the valley.
Today the town combines the older centre along the road with residential areas spreading into the surrounding hills. Forested slopes, small rice fields and winding roads fill the space between settlements, and the railway runs through the valley.
