Mittweida sits above the valley of the Zschopau in central Saxony. From above, the old town is a compact knot of streets around the market square on higher ground. The river curves through the valley below, and the later neighbourhoods spread across the plateau beyond the historic core.
The town is best known for its university of applied sciences. It was founded in 1867 as a private technical institute, the Technikum Mittweida, and trained generations of engineers. Today, as Hochschule Mittweida, it gives the small town a strong student presence and a campus that forms its own area on the map.
