Mlandizi is in Tanzania's Pwani Region, on the main road running west from Dar es Salaam toward Morogoro. From above, that highway runs through the middle of the town. Shops, markets and houses gather along it, and smaller streets and footpaths lead off into residential areas on either side.
The countryside around it is low, fairly flat coastal hinterland, with small farms, bush and scattered homesteads. The Ruvu River flows through this part of Pwani, and its valley brings wetter ground and denser vegetation to parts of the landscape. On a map, the river's winding line contrasts with the straight highway.
