Motozintla Map Poster & Print
Motozintla lies in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas, close to Mexico's border with Guatemala. The town sits deep in a narrow valley, so its streets stretch along the valley floor instead of spreading outward. Steep, forested slopes rise on both sides and hold the settlement in a long, slender shape.
A river runs through the valley alongside the town, and its course has shaped both the street layout and the town's history. In 2005 the rains of Hurricane Stan caused severe flooding here. Roads wind up and out of the valley, climbing toward coffee country and highland communities.
A Motozintla map poster conveys how firmly geography governs the place. The town is a tight linear band of blocks following the river, closely framed by mountainsides and traced by switchbacking roads. The composition has a vertical energy unlike the open grids of lowland towns, and it looks particularly strong in portrait format.

River corridor
The river runs beside and through the town, a flowing line that explains why Motozintla takes the shape it does.
Mountain switchbacks
Roads climb out of the valley in winding curves and add fine, looping lines to the steep terrain on either side.
