Port Alberni lies in the middle of Vancouver Island, at the head of Alberni Inlet, a long, narrow fjord that runs south-west to Barkley Sound and the open Pacific. On a map, the inlet is the dominant shape: a slender channel of water leading into the town, with the Somass River entering from the north and mountains rising on both sides.
The town grew around forestry, sawmills and the port, and its waterfront is still lined with industrial sites and docks. Streets climb the slopes from the harbour in a fairly regular grid, with the two historic town centres, once separate settlements, now joined. In 1964, a tsunami travelling up the inlet caused serious damage here.
