Rijeka is Croatia's largest port, set at the head of Kvarner Bay in the northern Adriatic. The city occupies a narrow strip between the sea and steep limestone hills, and its map is long and layered. The port and railway run along the shore, the old town and main streets sit just behind them, and residential districts climb the slopes on switchback roads.
The Rječina River cuts through the city in a deep gorge before reaching the sea; both names mean river. In the historic centre, the Korzo promenade runs parallel to the waterfront.
