Saky lies on the flat steppe of western Crimea, a few kilometres inland from the Black Sea coast north of Yevpatoria. The most striking feature on its map is Saky Lake, a broad, shallow salt lake next to the town, divided by dams into sections. The town's streets spread in a mostly regular pattern along its shore.
Saky has been known since the nineteenth century for its therapeutic mud, taken from the lake bed and used in the town's sanatoriums.
