Saldanha lies on the northern shore of Saldanha Bay on South Africa's West Coast. From above, water is the main feature: a wide, protected bay opens to the Atlantic through a narrow entrance, and the town's streets follow the curve of the northern shore. Low, dry land stretches inland, with only a scattering of roads.
The bay is one of the deepest natural harbours in southern Africa. Its most striking structure is the long jetty used to ship iron ore brought by rail from the interior. On a map it is a thin, straight line cutting across the water, a clearly industrial mark against the soft outline of the coast.
A Saldanha map poster also shows the bay's quieter sides. Mussel and oyster farms work these waters. To the south, the bay continues into Langebaan Lagoon and the West Coast National Park, a long finger of shallow water that turns the composition into a study of inlets, spits and shorelines.
