Santa Clarita lies in northern Los Angeles County, filling a set of valleys between the San Gabriel and Santa Susana mountains. From above, it is a mosaic of curving suburban streets, cul-de-sacs and golf courses, split by the dry, braided bed of the Santa Clara River and framed by bare ridges.
The city was incorporated in 1987 from several communities, including Valencia, Newhall, Saugus and Canyon Country, and each still has its own street pattern.
