São Joaquim sits high on the Serra Catarinense plateau in southern Brazil, at an altitude of more than 1,300 metres. From above, the town appears as a fairly regular grid laid over gently rolling ground, with streets bending where the hills interrupt them. Beyond the town, the map opens into pastures, woodland and orchards crossed by long country roads.
The town is known as one of the coldest in Brazil, where frost is common in winter and snow falls in some years, which draws visitors from across the country. The cool climate has also made São Joaquim a centre of apple growing, and in recent decades vineyards producing high-altitude wines have spread across the surrounding hills.
