Shāzand lies on a high plain in Markazi province, south-west of the city of Arak, with the ranges of the Zagros rising nearby. It is the centre of Shāzand county and is known across Iran for its large oil refinery and petrochemical complex, which occupy extensive sites outside the town. On the map these industrial areas show as large, geometric blocks.
The town is compact, with a core of streets around its main roads and residential areas extending towards the surrounding fields.
